Site Review: Pond5.com - Excellent Value for Sellers & Buyers

Videographers looking for a great first or second option to sell their footage should look no further than Pond5.com. Pond5 provides a global marketplace of buyers who will be able to search for, preview, purchase and download your footage instantly, online, 24 hours a day.

One of the great advanatges of signing up at Pond5.com is its flexibility. Video footage producers sign a non-exclusive contract and complete control over your work: you retain all rights to your footage, and can do whatever you like with it, including sell it elsewhere or instantly remove it from the Pond5 marketplace.

Some other sites do not accept editorial or news footage, Pond5 does.

Since joining up with Pond5 a few months ago I have been more than impressed with the site. Things that have impressed me thus far include the following:

  • 50% commission - the highest in the business. Most other stock video sites only offer 20-30% commission.
  • Quick submission review times - other sites can take a month or more to review submissions, Pond5 generally takes a few days or less.
  • Reliable upload methods - both the java uploader and ftp upload have been trouble free.
  • Templates - the ability to use templates to tag similar clips has saved me a lot of time in the painstaking task of tagging videos.
  • Ability to set prices - Pond5.com gives videographers the opportunity to set their own prices. This is a great feature because it allows you to set the price according to the value or quality of the clip. So if you have a video that is in high demand, you can raise the price to take advantage of the demand.
  • Friendly and helpful community - I have found the forums at Pond5.com to be friendlier than most.

Pond5.com doesnt yet have the same traffic as market leader istockphoto.com, but it is growing rapidly. At time of writing Pond5.com has 76 000 clips online as opposed to istocks 110 000. From personal experience, while I dont sell quite as many videos at Pond5.com, I have made more money from Pond5.com than any other stock video site. The 50% commission (rather than the typical 20-30%) makes a huge difference.

Royalty-Free Stock Video at Pond5Verdict: Pond5.com could quite possibly be the best stock video site out there for videographers. It provides excellent value for both sellers and buyers. Videographers wanting to profit from stock video would be mad to miss this opportunity.
